A dilated eye exam also allows your doctor to check for damage to the optic nerve that occurs when a person has glaucoma. After the examination your close-up vision may remain blurred for several hours. Tonometry is the measurement of eye pressure. High eye pressure can be a possible sign of glaucoma. This is done either with a small puff of air or with numbing drops and gentle pressure on the surface of the eye.
Caught early glaucoma can be controlled with medications and lasers. The most common vision problems are refractive errors, more commonly known as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. Refractive errors occur when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing direction on the retina.
Common symptoms of refractive errors are blurred vision, double vision, glare, headaches and eye strain. Refractive error can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery.
